Sailing (beginner & intermediate)

Format

Scheduled around your availability with regular sessions on flexible days and times. Safe, theory-plus-practical progression toward clear goals, without rushing, with personal coaching.

Materials: PDF notes, classroom slides, laminated folder for onboard reference; boats rigged with instruments for exercises.

After the course you may continue coached sailing with school boats through Club Navega benefits (rentals and further training).

Notes: this syllabus prepares you to sail; Mexican sea-book requirements follow national rules—typically building toward PER-level knowledge where applicable.

Syllabus — beginner sailing course (20 hours)

Section 1. Sailing theory

Aerodynamics & hydrodynamics, points of sail, breeze behaviour day/night, cloud signatures and fronts.

Section 2. Rig & sails

Standing and running rigging, sail shape and materials, ropework and essential knots.

Section 3. Sailing manoeuvres I

3.1 Rigging and unrigging (1 h). 3.2 Hoisting precautions: clear halyards, loose mainsheet, boat head-to-wind. 3.3 Lowering precautions: head-to-wind, halyard tension, lines coiled or belayed. 3.4 Manoeuvre basics (1 h): points of sail recap — tacking and gybing introduction.

Section 4. Sailing manoeuvres II

4.1 Sail balance (1 h): how trim affects boat speed. 4.2 Sail trim (1 h): cautious easing and sheeting. 4.3 Sheets and controls for mainsail adjustment.

Section 5. Sailing manoeuvres III

5.1 Tacking (1 h): checks before starting the tack. 5.2 Gybing (1 h): running precautions. 5.3 Gybe variations (broad reach to broad reach). 5.4 Prefer tacking over gybing in heavy air. 5.5 Boat balance after the gybe and settling on course.

Section 6. Sailing manoeuvres

6.1 Heaving-to (1 h): slowing/stopping the boat. 6.2 Rudder and sail effect when accelerating. 6.3 Sailing backwards easing jib and pushing mainsail to windward. 6.4 Anchoring (1 h): preparing anchor and rode. 6.5 Approach under stern breeze and lowering headsail. 6.6 Anchoring setup and heel considerations. 6.7 Weighing anchor and sailing off the anchorage.

Section 7. Safety manoeuvres

7.1 Crew-overboard (1 h): preventing a fall overboard. 7.2 Repeat COB with stern breeze and approach on a close reach. 7.3 Reefing mainsail and reducing headsail (1 h). 7.4 Headsail reductions — furler, staysail track, or hanks.

Section 8. Safety while sailing

8.1 Gear risks (1 h): dismasting, loss of steerage way, jury rigs. 8.2 Preventing chafe and wear points. 8.3 Using halyards as emergency standing rigging. 8.4 Manoeuvre risks (1 h): limited visibility hazards. 8.5 Tacking risks — overrides and winch issues. 8.6 Gybing risks — mainsheet traveller and safe gybing. 8.7 Crew placement with heel and staying in the cockpit. 8.8 Night sailing — compass light, torches, sail illumination for visibility.

Practical assessment

Attendance, 1 h oral seamanship, 3 h solo navigation with a written passage plan.
